Great article on software user experience (UX) in Venture Beat: 4 UX mistakes killing your product (and how to fix them).

From the article:

“You’re offering a great product that everyone should love… so why don’t they? Chances are, it’s not your product or service is built so much as your UX. Offering something in demand isn’t enough — you also have to offer an enjoyable experience with it. The product is merely a vessel through which you deliver a lasting experience.

The author lists the four following common UX mistakes in health IT products:

  • Clever for the sake of being clever
  • Skimping on usability testing
  • Focusing on visuals and not the experience
  • Forcing user behavior

Too often, software developers forget to focus on what acclaimed Harvard business professor Clayton Christensen calls the Jobs to Be Done, which really is at the center of user experience.

If developers don’t know what job their users are looking to accomplish, how can they help make their jobs easier?

Karen Dillon, Contributing Editor of Harvard Business Review, recently interviewed by the This is Product Management podcast, said:

“The reason people make choices is not because of who they are, or the specific features and benefits, it’s because [they’re] struggling with something and trying to make progress to accomplish something.”

If you have time, I highly recommend listening to the full interview. Ms. Dillon is a colleague of Christensen and has written books with him on the topic of disruption.

UX and usability testing are key components of how we develop Corepoint Integration Engine and Corepoint Community Exchange. In fact, a great majority of our product upgrades included in each release are actually suggested by our products’ users!

We believe that software should make jobs easier, which in our case is building interfaces and creating interoperability between applications and locations. That’s why you don’t have to be a programmer to use Corepoint Integration Engine to create interfaces. And, if you are a developer, you can spend your time doing so much more with your data using our engine that previously was unavailable.

Not to brag, but there is a reason why Corepoint Integration Engine has been the #1 integration engine in KLAS for eight straight years and has the highest satisfaction score among all vendors, regardless of category.
