HL7 FHIR is an emerging health data standard that promises to help health IT software vendors more easily exchange patient data between applications. Many in the industry believe that HL7 FHIR, which utilizes modern approaches to data exchange similar to Facebook, Twitter and Amazon, is the long-awaited answer to healthcare’s current interoperability challenges.
To help advance the dialog around FHIR, Shaver will present five whiteboard sessions for HIMSS attendees at the Corepoint Health booth, #8115, at the following times:
- Mon., April 13: 2:00-2:30 p.m.
- Tues., April 14: 11:00-11:30 a.m. and 2:00-2:30 p.m.
- Wed., April 15: 11:00-11:30 a.m. and 2:00-2:30 p.m.
Reservations are recommended but are not required. HIMSS attendees can also pick up a free whitepaper at the Corepoint Health booth titled “What is HL7 FHIR,” which provides an in-depth look at how the standard can improve health data exchange. The paper describes how FHIR utilizes lightweight methods for data exchange, how FHIR compares to current standards in use, and where the emerging standard is most likely to have the greatest impact.
HL7 FHIR combines the best features of HL7 V2, HL7 V3, and Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) HL7 CDA uses XML for encoding of the documents and breaks down the document in generic, unnamed, and non-templated sections. Documents can include discharge summaries, progress notes, history and physical reports,... More, while leveraging the latest web service technologies. FHIR is still being developed by HL7 International, but the first draft standard for trial use was available in 2014, and the first normative edition is planned for 2017.
Shaver currently serves as the co-chair of both the HL7 FHIR Governance Board and the HL7 Infrastructure and Messaging Committee. He received the 2011 HL7 W. Ed Hammond Volunteer of the Year award and was named an HL7 Fellow in 2013. Shaver is the founder and CTO of Corepoint Health, which develops Corepoint Integration Engine, the industry's top ranked interface engine in the Best in KLAS: Software & Services report for the sixth straight year.
