The great spectacle of HIMSS16 is finally upon us and we're set at booth #3408 to talk all things health data, including exchange, integration, workflow and – during four educational sessions  at our booth – how FHIR stands for Fast Healthcare Interoperable Resource. This emerging standard combines the best features of HL7 V2, HL7 V3, and CDA, while leveraging the latest web service technologies. The design of FHIR is based on RESTful web services. (There’s that word again: Interoperability refers to the ability of two or more systems or components to exchange information and to use the information that has been exchanged..)
Despite the emergence of new trends and new analytics applications, interoperability remains the most important buzz word at HIMSS, despite the longing from analysts and industry press for something new to talk about.
Actually, the day is getting closer when we can start assuming that organizations are able to integrate and exchange patient data freely between systems and applications of their choosing and benefit from “big data” intelligence that we all hope can dramatically improve how care is delivered.
According to a 2015 HIMSS Analytics report, titled “Integration Engines: Conquering Interoperability Challenges,”  leading hospitals and health systems such as Baptist Health, Providence Health & Services, and UnityPoint Health are finding interoperability success by first creating a foundation of connected care, where all application health data is centralized and managed by a integration engine. Once centralized, the organizations’ IT departments are able to grow with confidence and employ a best-of-breed software approach to satisfy caregivers’ needs for patient care.
The Platform for Health Data Activity
These high-quality, sustainable health IT systems depend on a best-of-breed integration layer that serves as the health data platform to interoperate between applications.
