“Corepoint Health delivered a solution that enabled our clinic to quickly adapt while meeting the demand to more efficiently connect with other healthcare providers.”
McFarland Clinic was established in 1946 as one of Iowa’s first multi-specialty clinics. Over the past 60 years, they have grown into central Iowa’s largest physician-owned, multi-specialty clinic that includes more than 20 offices in 12 Iowa communities with an additional 12 communities served by physician outreach clinics.
Healthcare Interfacing Challenges
Initial requirement was to find a way to receive HL7 is a Standards Developing Organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to author consensus-based standards representing a board view from healthcare system stakeholders. HL7 has compiled a collection of message form... More messages for an internally built dictation system. Current environment consisted of a series of Ad Hoc SQL queries from provider Oracle databases.
An interface engine platform was needed to support future requirements and meet industry standards, such as HL7.
McFarland needed to receive and process ADT (patient demographic information) and SIU (appointment information from hospital scheduling system) messages from providers.
Installed Corepoint Integration Engine™ to replace existing system, that was based on a series of SQL scripts extracting data from Oracle databases. Using Corepoint Health’s interface engine, McFarland Clinic built interfaces to the internally constructed dictation system and Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) HL7 CDA uses XML for encoding of the documents and breaks down the document in generic, unnamed, and non-templated sections. Documents can include discharge summaries, progress notes, history and physical reports,... More (Compound Document Architecture) system.
Corepoint Integration Engine enabled McFarland Clinic to:
Effectively and accurately exchange ADT and SIU messages with providers.
Monitor the interface environment and message transactions, ensuring service level expectations are met.
Efficiently identify message issues, allowing for timely corrections to meet the required message structure.
McFarland Clinic PC’s Insights
Doug Patterson is the CIO of McFarland Clinic and leads their healthcare IT practices. His insights:
“We recognized the industry was moving towards the HL7 messaging standard. In order to avoid putting our clinic at a competitive disadvantage, and to better prepare for the future, we needed to replace our existing clinical data communication methods and adopt HL7 as our standard. Our first step in achieving that goal was to find an HL7 and interface engine partner that could best serve our needs.
We selected Corepoint Health not only because they offered the most cost effective solution for our needs, but because of their strong reputation in the marketplace. I had no doubt they would deliver. We turned to Corepoint Health because we needed a robust interface to work with our dictation system, and that’s exactly what we got, plus a lot more.
The ease of use and simplicity that Corepoint Integration Engine offers has been very beneficial for my team. Like many medical clinics we operate with limited resources. Corepoint Health provided our clinic with a simple-to-use method to build and deploy critical interfaces to variety of other applications. This approach helps us leverage our resources in the most effective way.
With Corepoint Health, we now have an integration platform to enhance our clinical exchanges with hospitals and a diverse group of other providers. Corepoint Health delivered a solution that enabled our clinic to quickly adapt while meeting the demand to more efficiently connect with other healthcare providers.
My experience from this process has left me with a great impression of Corepoint Health. Their professionalism, follow through and expertise was greatly appreciated. I wish every vendor I worked with was as thorough and trouble-free as Corepoint Health.
Brian Cassaidy, software engineer, was responsible for coordinating the replacement of the current environment with Corepoint Integration Engine. His insights:
“In order to better support our physician community, it was important that we adopt an industry-leading healthcare integration engine. Our existing environment, while capable and functional, did not meet this objective. We had a series of ad hoc queries that simply wasn’t the best platform to meet our requirements, so the decision was made to adopt the HL7 standard.
We initially selected Corepoint Integration Engine specifically for use with a dictation system we were developing. However, we were so pleased with the results that we implemented interfaces to connect to our radiology providers. Next, we will use Corepoint Integration Engine to receive lab results and provide connectivity to an internally developed CDA (Compound Document Architecture) system to receive ORU messages from transcription sources.
We are very happy with Corepoint Health’s performance. Corepoint Integration Engine is extremely robust and has some very attractive features. Being able to resend messages along with the logging capabilities are particularly valuable.”
I was just learning about HL7 when given Corepoint Integration Engine and have to say the installation went more smoothly than most software installs normally do. When a few issues did surface, the support staff was absolutely wonderful. It’s easy to say the support I received from Corepoint Health surpassed that of any vendor I’ve worked with.”
