“Corepoint Health delivers solutions that offer real value and operational fit with our strategic plan and creates positive leverage in our MEDITECH and ancillary application environment.”
Natividad Medical Center is a 172-bed community hospital owned and operated by Monterey County. Natividad offers individuals and families throughout Monterey County, modern facilities with high quality, innovative and accessible health services from highly trained clinicians. Natividad comprehensive inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services are administered by staff consisting of more than 268 physicians with 44 specialties.
Healthcare Interfacing Challenges
As part of their strategic plan — Vision 2010 – to further advance patient care and elevate their technological competitiveness, Natividad required an integration platform that would supersede their point-to-point method of interfacing to various internal applications with their MEDITECH Hospital Information System (HIS) is the main system in a hospital used by most caregivers. Sends ADT broadcasts to all ancillary applications. The HIS is typically the patient administrative system and order entry system for a hospital. Synonyms:... More system. The challenge was to find an integration platform that would be economical, practical, and flexible in its approach to interfacing and more compatible with other applications receiving the data feed from their MEDITECH system. Ultimately, their existing point-to-point connectivity strategy increased cost with each new interface and extended implementation times.
Their criteria for acquiring an integration platform solution were as follows:
Reduce the implementation time of connecting new interfaces.
Provide flexibility with fewer restrictions in configuring HL7 is a Standards Developing Organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to author consensus-based standards representing a board view from healthcare system stakeholders. HL7 has compiled a collection of message form... More messaging for internal applications.
Significantly lower the cost of connecting new interfaces versus using a point-to-point method.
Operate and configure easisly for technical and non-technical staff.
Able to utilize existing hospital resources effectively.
After evaluating several competitive interface engines, Natividad selected Corepoint Integration Engine as the most viable integration solution to achieve their strategic goals of creating a more patient centric, advanced care hospital. Implementing Corepoint Integration Engine, Natividad is leveraging the platform as a hub for all incoming and outgoing clinical data, which has significantly enhanced the manageability of multiple interface connections. The implementation of Corepoint Integration Engine is a crucial step forward for Natividad in becoming one of the most integrated, technologically advanced public, safety net hospitals in the area.
In implementing Corepoint Integration Engine, four interface connections were completed within days.
Several systems are now connected using Corepoint Integration Engine. For example, some of the systems include: MEDITECH, Exit-Writer, JLG Medical Transcription, and SoftMed.
Ability to build interfaces in significantly less time, eliminating the cost of acquiring and maintaining pointto-point connections.
Able to test interfaces proactively with Corepoint Integration Engine’s robust testing features.
Able to configure HL7 messages to meet the requirements of internal and external applications.
Technical and non-technical staffs are able to easily operate Corepoint Integration Engine.
Natividad Medical Center Insights
Michael Jobin, Chief Information Officer, and Danielle Begley Departmental Information Systems Coordinator:
“Selecting an integration engine platform and partner centered on three primary evaluation criteria – customer support, product reputation, and ease of use in building, testing, and deploying interfaces. Corepoint Health exceeded in all three,” said Jobin.
Jobin added, “Corepoint Health has the reputation of working productively with hospitals that have numerous interface connections in large, connected, extended healthcare communities. Corepoint Health also has a solid reputation and experience working with MEDITECH hospitals.”
“We needed an interface engine that would work immediately, right out-of-the-box, with technical and non-technical staff able to easily become accustomed to and quickly begin operating with minimal ramp-up time. Corepoint Integration Engine met our primary requirements – solid reputation and productive usability. Many of the other solutions we reviewed required manual programming and maintenance to operate, which would have further delayed the overall implementation process,” said Jobin.
“After implementing Corepoint Integration Engine, we went from up to 90 days to purchase and implement new interfaces to hours, even minutes to create new interfaces The Corepoint Integration Engine has significantly streamlined our cycle times on implementing new interfaces,” said Begley.
“Before implementing Corepoint Integration Engine, we had to manually test our interfaces. The testing components of Corepoint Integration Engine are robust. You simply can input information and it will completely test everything for you at the push of a button. It’s simply amazing, “said Begley.
“Previously our point-to-point interfaces required constant monitoring. The Corepoint Integration Engine is extremely stable. We’ve had no problems with the platform whatsoever. It’s great knowing you can create an interface and walk away with confidence that it will run,” said Jobin.
Jobin concluded, “Corepoint Health delivers solutions that offer real value and operational fit with our strategic plan and creates positive leverage in our MEDITECH and ancillary application environment.”
